New plays by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel and the actor and playwright Colman Domingo will be produced by the Vineyard Theatre during 2015-16 season, it has been announced by Artistic Directors Douglas Aibel and Sarah Stern. A third mainstage production for next season is still to be announced. Vineyard Theatre is located at 108 E. 15 St. in New York City.
Directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman, Colman Domingo’s play DOT concerns what happens when family matriarch Dotty and her three adult children gather for the holidays with more than exchanging presents on their minds. As Dotty struggles to navigate life with dementia, her children fight to balance care for their mother and care for themselves. A testament to the enduring bonds of family, this hilarious and moving new play grapples unforgettably with aging parents, midlife crises, and the heart of an inner city neighborhood.
Mr. Domingo’s previous play A BOY AND HIS SOUL was a great success at The Vineyard in 2009. Director Susan Stroman returns to Vineyard Theatre, where she directed the company’s acclaimed world-premiere of the Kander & Ebb musical THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, which transferred to Broadway. Ms. Stroman and Mr. Domingo were reunited last year when THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS opened in London and transferred to the West End after a sold-out, award-winning run at the Old Vic. DOT was just produced as part of Actor’s Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival of New American Plays and will premiere on The Vineyard stage early in 2016.
Paula Vogel, who received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE at Vineyard Theatre in 1998, and later returned with THE LONG CHRISTMAS RIDE HOME, comes back to The Vineyard with INDECENT — a play she’s created with the award-winning director Rebecca Taichman (STAGE KISS) — scheduled for its debut at The Vineyard in the spring of 2016.
A play with music, co-created and directed by Ms. Taichman, INDECENT is inspired by the true events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s GOD OF VENGEANCE, a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel. INDECENT charts the history of an incendiary drama and the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it.
INDECENT was commissioned by Yale Rep and American Revolutions: the U.S. History Cycle at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and will be performed at Yale Rep and La Jolla Playhouse prior to its New York debut at The Vineyard.
The third play of the 2015-16 season and casting for DOT and INDECENT are to be announced.
The Vineyard also announces that its 2016-17 season will begin with the Off-Broadway premiere of KID VICTORY, the new musical by John Kander and Greg Pierce. KID VICTORY, which was in development at The Vineyard prior to its premiere at Signature Theatre in Virginia this past February, has story by John Kander & Greg Pierce, music by John Kander, book & lyrics by Greg Pierce and is directed by Liesl Tommy (APPROPRIATE). KID VICTORY is a co-production with Signature. Kander and Pierce’s first musical THE LANDING has its world-premiere at The Vineyard in 2013.
