Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed is a solo show by Ingrid Griffith about the first African American woman to win a seat in Congress and the first African American to run for President of the U.S. for a major political party: Shirley Chisholm. In the 1960s and ’70s, this Brooklyn-born daughter of Caribbean parents was on a mission. They called her the Black Joan of Arc. She called herself “Fighting Shirley” as she faced off against the political machine in the name of justice.

This inspiring story dramatizes the Civil Rights era, the unrest of the 1960s, the patriarchal system and the all-boys network Shirley Chisholm was up against — many themes we still see in the politics of today.

Vineyard Theatre is excited to partner with Daryl Roth again and bring another powerful reading to our audience.

Ingrid Griffith is a New York City based actor and the creator and performer of Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed, a one-woman show about the life and times of the political pioneer/social justice activist Shirley Anita (St. Hill) Chisholm. Ingrid has been touring Unbossed & Unbowed across the country and abroad for the past 3 years, with the hope that this largely unheard story will enlighten audiences and inspire them to take action that will bring about positive change. Ingrid Griffith’s one-woman show, Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed, won Outstanding Playwriting Award at the Hear Her Call Caribbean American Women’s Playwriting Festival (2020). She received a Danny Glover Power of Dream Award (2022), a Guyana Cultural Award for her work’s originality, scope, impact, influence, and her pioneering spirit (2023). Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed & Unbowed was winner of the 2023 Suzi Bass Award, Atlanta’s professional theater awards, for Outstanding Production about Social Justice (produced by Out of Hand Theater in Atlanta, GA) and Ingrid Griffith was a 2023 Suzi Bass Award Nominee for Outstanding Principal Performer in a Play. Ingrid Griffith is also known for her award-winning and internationally acclaimed solo show, Demerara Gold, a Guyanese girl’s coming-to-America story that addresses what she and her family gained and lost.(demeraragoldtheshow.com)

Ingrid has been in Off-Broadway and regional stage productions in classical and contemporary roles. Some of her favorites are: Lady Reveller in The Basset Table by Susanna Centlivre, Mrs. Muller in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, Hedda Gabler in Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, Ruth Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, Mama Nadi in Ruined by Lynn Nottage and Elaine Brown in Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles.

Ingrid is taking a page from Shirley Chisholm. She is determined to continue her grass roots efforts to perform Unbossed & Unbowed and to share it especially with school-aged audiences who she believes will be empowered by knowing Shirley Chisholm’s story. The show will encourage audiences to vote this election year and would be a wonderful offer in celebration of Shirley Chisholm’s accomplishments especially on her Centennial Anniversary, November 30, 2024.
