Acclaimed theatremaker Tina Satter (Is This A Room) returns to Vineyard Theatre with Half Straddle’s PETRA, a bold new reimagining of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s psychological chamber piece, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant.

Celebrated fashion designer Petra lives and works in a world of her own making, attended by her devoted assistant, Marlené. When a beautiful young model named Karin enters her orbit, Petra falls obsessively in love — and her carefully constructed reality begins to unravel.

Sharp, seductive, and darkly funny, Satter’s fresh staging transforms this cult classic of emotional warfare into a riveting contemporary event.

Tina Satter is an American filmmaker, playwright, and director based in New York City. She founded the theater company HALF STRADDLE in 2008 and in collaboration with Half Straddle designers and actors has presented over 11 of her original plays and video pieces throughout the United States, Japan, Australia, and Europe. Her most recent play Is This A Room premiered at The Kitchen in NYC in 2019; had an extended, critically acclaimed Off Broadway run at The Vineyard Theatre later that year; and its Broadway premiere at the Lyceum Theatre in 2021. Tina’s awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Pew Fellowship, Doris Duke Impact Artist Award, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award, among others. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Park Avenue Armory. Her debut narrative feature film REALITY, adapted from Is This A Room, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2023 and is currently streaming on HBO MAX. The film was nominated for the Gotham Award for Best Feature, two Critics Choice Awards, and won a Peabody Award. REALITY was named one of the best films of the year by The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Guardian.
